The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) research degree is a much sought after qualification and is aimed to provide a thorough training in a particular subject area through the original exploration and experiment, culminating in the preparation of a dissertation work outlining in detail the findings and setting the conclusions of the special area of the research undertaken.

The PhD research degree will enable and provide the candidates full training in research techniques and methodologies leading to the advancement of knowledge in a special subject area. The University is more than glad to discuss with the candidate/candidates’ choice of research projects. PhD candidates having decided on their area of research will then be assigned a personal supervisor to oversee their research project. Supervisors draw on their own special experience of the subject to guide the candidates work and at the same time give encouragement as well as critical advice.

The Supervisor’s role is to advise on the preparation and submission of the written dissertation by which the PhD degree is examined.

As an institution for higher learning, we recognize that research degree programs support personal development as well as the development of subject knowledge and research skills.

Submission of Research Proposal
A substantial research proposed of about 4,000 – 6,000 words is required to be submitted and must be approved by the Research Senate of the University before a candidate can commence the PhD dissertation.

PhD Dissertation
An original piece of work written in about 60,000 words by the candidate must be submitted to the Research Degree Senate. All doctoral candidates must demonstrate their:

• Ability to undertake and complete an original investigation of tests and ideas
• Sound understanding of research techniques and the ability to apply and appropriate the
  researched knowledge gained
• Development and powers of critical analysis, the unification of theoretical analysis
• The acquisition of new knowledge and understanding in the discipline of the chosen area
  of enquiry
• Work is of original contribution to knowledge and worthy of publication
